Unemployment Falls but Signs of 'Deep Distress' Remain

The latest employment statistics released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show a small drop in unemployment of just 4,000 to 2.51 million. The fall between January-March and April-June this year meant the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.8 per cent. However July’s claimant count fell by 29,200 to 1.44 million compared to the previous month, and the number of people claiming for 12 months or more and therefore classified as long term unemployed, fell by 2,500 to 424,000.
