When older people assemble @agescotland

The Scottish Older People’s Assembly (SOPA) takes place today.  It’s an opportunity for older people from across the country to raise issues of concern and to debate the hot topics for later life.  And it’s streaming live from 10.30 this morning.

Scottish-Older-Peoples-Assembly

This year’s Assembly, which takes place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, will consider the impact of Welfare Reform on older people.  There will also be a focus on activities that encourage older people to remain socially connected and to contribute to society. Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, will participate in the event.

In preparation for SOPA Age Scotland’s communications team hosted ‘video pods’ at each of the Charity’s four regional assembly events.  These offered older people an opportunity to ‘have their say,’ on camera, and a compilation of their views will feature in today’s national assembly event.

Our regional delegates raised concerns around topics including home care services, access to transport and the ‘age-friendliness’ – or otherwise – of neighbourhood environments.  But many also spoke out in praise of the fantastic clubs and groups that across the country are making sure older people can enjoy friendship, fun and a ‘little bit of help’ whenever it’s required.
